One of ArtWorks for Youth’s latest programming additions is playwriting and theater. Twice a week, this class writes and performs sketches, most of which are based on the lives of the students.
As part of one of our recent processions, we had a Theater Practitioner from Johannesburg conduct a week long workshop in Forum Theater, which uses methods from the Theater of the Oppressed in helping students to reframe and reshape stressors in their lives via theater.
We have also recently been writing screen plays with students in order to have them to write the stories of their lives in groups so that they can, through the safety of the characters, discuss stressors they have in common, thereby supporting one another in the process. It is our hope to film these amazing stories at some point in the near future.
